The very first step is the BOSS, because without his/her support you have already ran aground.

  • Approach management with a positive attitude.
  • Myself and other members of the team would like to implement a conservation program with your support.
  • Present to management an organization plan using your ideas and some of the following. Organize information in a three ring binder for a presentation.
  • Gather support and commitment from other staff members and department heads.
  • Commitment is the key to success.

Contact the local utility and recycling organizations, inquire about information and guidance. Request they send you anything that will expedite your goals; they may be willing to do a group training session. Ask the agencies for decals, recycling bins. Inquire where to buy water saving faucets and other useful gadgets on the market. If they have a web site, send it to chefspinzone and we will post it.

  • A conservation program requires everyday reminders from the supervisors in all departments, in morning staff meetings, lineups and post information on employees bulletin board.
  • Why the reason for the reminders? Because for so long we have neglected these areas.
  • You will need recycling bins in all areas for employees to discard proper recycling items. Believe me!

Once management is on board it will need to make this a mandatory routine for all employees or it will fail. Why? Because some people just don't care, to lazy, or environmental terrorists.

This is how one property made it worked perfectly. The BOSS informed all supervisors that we were going forward with a progressive Conservation Program to include Water, Recycling and Energy and would expect every one in the organization or family to become involved; not only involved but to participate with ideas and suggestions .

A meeting was held for all staff and the deal was done. One would ask was it flawless?
No, it was challenged two or three times; the challengers were given the next day off, this of course was the rule if you forget to punch your time clock. The performance of the staff was gratifying.

We will post your ideas and information you send us

  • When washing your hands turn the water on only half way.
  • Think ahead! Donít thaw frozen food by running 100 gallons of water over the top because someone forget to pull product the day before.
  • Have maintenance fix all leaks.
  • Turn out lights that are not required.
  • Example why would house keeping leave all the lights on in the executive offices when no will be showing up for the next two (2) hours?
  • This is what I did on a seasonal property when it was closed, in the hall ways and bathrooms I placed 7 watt lights the ones you plug in the light socket, traffic was minimal (3 to 4 employees) did it save a lot probably a little. But what if 25 million businesses did the same? This is where we as an industry can help.
  • A bin for office copy paper this is a huge waste. Think of what one office building in Manhattan contributes every day. As an industry what does the food service generates? A huge amount.

We've all seen litter scattered alongside a roadway. Do you know how long it will take to decompose to a non-recognizable form?
